Kale Steward

Kale Stewart, originally from western Kansas, had his first introduction to glass while earning a BFA from Emporia State University in Kansas. He furthered his education by completing a MFA in glass at Illinois State University.

Stewart’s early experiences focused on traditional glass blowing techniques and his fascination with molten glass soon evolved into glass casting and glass sculpting. He has created multiple works of art using a host of glass forming methods, which produce unique and interesting final outcomes, making Kale a very versatile artist. Some of his latest works utilize different mold-making approaches and glass working techniques to create pieces that are inspired by elements of building and construction.

After his MFA graduation in May 2018, Kale spent the summer working and learning at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. His quest for more artistic knowledge and skill took him to Townshend, Vermont for the fall of 2018. Kale gained experience working with well-known artists delving primarily in glass, metal, and installation. In the spring of 2019, Kale moved to Dallas to establish Stew’s Glass with his brother Jace.

Stew’s glass has been on display in art festivals this summer. Their most recent event was the 45th annual Ponca City Fine Arts Festival Ponca City Art where he was awarded the Florence Riesen Novice Award, which is a special award for the top new artist.

Kale Stewart – Artist Statement

My interest in the aesthetics of man-made materials grew exponentially during my time working with my father, who was an Industrial Arts teacher and taught construction classes. My time working with him in and around the construction yard piqued my interest in all the materials and tools that surrounded me. I had the unique opportunity to see the substructures of buildings that go largely unseen. The network of materials and how they work together, the contrasts of colors and shapes, and the impressive scale.
