Created live during Gallery Night at SiNaCa Studios in September 2024, Calm Eddy captures the energy of the moment and the intimacy of the glassblowing process. Kevin McGehee, a glass artist with over 25 years of experience, shaped this piece in front of an audience, transforming molten glass into a meditative swirl of blue and green.

Using preheated color rods at 1,000ºF, Kevin attached vibrant blues and greens to the blow pipe, then twisted and layered them to create the piece’s signature swirling effect. Clear glass was added to the base, then blown and shaped into a sphere-like form. After transferring to a solid rod, the front half was reheated repeatedly. At the precise moment, rapid rotation opened the piece to reveal its calming blue-green interior. The final form evokes the gentle motion of water—fluid, reflective, and serene. Its layered colors and subtle distortions invite viewers to explore its depths from every angle. The piece’s dynamic surface shifts with light, offering a tranquil yet ever-changing visual experience.

“For me, SiNaCa’s public access facilities mean there is a place for artists and students alike to continue to explore and create with this unique material.” – Kevin McGehee
