Christa Westbrook, an Indigenous artist from the Choctaw Nation Tribe of Oklahoma, discovered glassmaking in high school. Captivated by its molten glow, she earned a BFA in Glass from Emporia State University. After working at The Corning Museum of Glass, she began exploring color techniques and pattern building to tell stories of community. Now based in Fort Worth, TX, Westbrook creates art at SiNaCa Studios and teaches glassmaking worldwide.
“This piece draws inspiration from the way women are often undervalued and diminished in society, reflecting both the delicate beauty of honey created by bees and the underestimation of women’s intelligence and contributions. It serves as a commentary on the roles imposed on women, their immense influence in shaping the world, and the persistent belief that their worth is lesser than that of men. Through the quiet strength and resilience women embody, they continue to build and shape societies in ways that are often unseen or unacknowledged.”
“This piece was created at the furnace, utilizing a veil cane technique as well as hot carving into the glass with a texting tool. Finished by coldworking the glass to expose the crosssection of the material.”
“This piece demands space for women to support one another in a world that insists on limiting us. It’s a direct challenge to outdated gender roles, calling out the need for equality and the right for all to learn and grow, free from the constraints society tries to impose.”
“SiNaCa Studios has been my glass home for the past three years, nurturing my creativity, deepening my passion for the medium, and creating a space to educate and inspire the community about the art of glassmaking.”
