Oxide Reactions Bowl by Aaron Tate
Winning Bid: $230.00
Alchemy in glass—where color meets chemistry.
Retail Value $550
Dimensions 9.25″ H x 9.25″ W x 3.75″ D
Crafted during SiNaCa Studios’ April 2024 Open Studios, Oxide Reactions Bowl is a vibrant experiment in color interaction and technique by veteran glassmaker Aaron Tate. The swirling amber and green hues are not just aesthetic—they’re the result of a deliberate chemical reaction between gold ruby frit and silver green frit. Twisted and fused into clear glass, the final pattern reveals the magic of oxide interplay and the artist’s curiosity in motion. To create the piece, Aaron applied these frits to the exterior of clear glass, which was then cut down into rods or canes. After heating the canes in a kiln, he fused them to the surface of another clear glass form. While molten, the glass was twisted to create the dynamic final pattern. The rich amber tones emerge from the oxides in the ruby and silver green frits reacting with one another, producing a visual effect that’s both scientific and stunning.
Aaron Tate has been working in glass for over 30 years, with a long and celebrated career in Seattle and now in Texas. Known for his technical skill and inventive spirit, Aaron continues to explore new methods and color applications in his work. This bowl represents a fresh direction—an experiment in reactive color layering that he plans to refine further.
“SiNaCa is the BEST! The people and its collective mission are dear to me.” — Aaron Tate
