Created during a live demonstration at SiNaCa Studios’ July 2021 Open Studios, Baby Doll Head is a collaborative fusion of flame working and hot shop sculpting, brought to life by SiNaCa’s glass blowing team and longtime instructor, Nick Gomez. This hauntingly expressive piece captures the playful edge and eerie nuance of mold-blown glass—punctuated by eyes that seem to peer right through you
What makes this head unique is its gaze. Nick hand-crafted a series of eye canes by layering colored frits into a molten mass, heating it evenly, and pulling it into thin strands. After cooling and cutting, the canes were dotted onto white discs and encased in clear glass to form vivid, lens-like eyes. These elements were preheated in a kiln and carefully fused onto the sculpted head mid-process—adding emotion and depth one glance at a time.
Nick Gomez is a flame worker whose journey began at SiNaCa Studios School of Glass, where he took his first class and discovered his passion for glass. With over 11 years of experience, he specializes in sculpting, pendant, and marble making. His work balances precision and imagination, creating glass pieces that feel both vibrant and alive.
“I’ve worked for SiNaCa since 2014, at this point SiNaCa is a second home and I consider the people who I work with to be a second family. I have dedicated so much of my time to SiNaCa because I believe in the educational and artistic mission to bring glass art to the community as well as enlighten people about the styles and techniques used to make glass art.” – Nick Gomez
