Created during a live demonstration at SiNaCa Studios’ September 2023 Open Studios, Geometric Buttress represents a bold departure from Chad Holliday’s mold-based precision. Crafted during a residency that blended hot shop access with collaborative energy, this piece was constructed using steel molds and assembled directly on the punty, merging sculptural form with traditional glassblowing techniques like cane and murrini. The result is a vibrant, architectural composition alive with movement and light.
Holliday’s practice typically centers on kiln-cast glass and monochromatic depth, but this series embraced spontaneity and play. By incorporating color and pattern into geometric forms, he created a synthesis of structure and fluidity. The red and yellow shapes woven into the glass evoke rhythm and tension, while the polished surface enhances the material’s ability to carry light and atmosphere. The sculpture stands tall and slender, its dynamic silhouette punctuated by bold geometric patterns. Red and yellow elements dance across the surface, creating a sense of motion within the rigid form. It’s a piece that feels both grounded and expressive—an architectural gesture infused with joy.
Chad Holliday is a glass artist based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with over 20 years of experience as an artist, educator, and technician. His work is held in museums and private collections internationally, reflecting a practice that balances material mastery with formal innovation.
“SiNaCa embodies everything a community should be: supportive, collaborative, and deeply connected. But it goes even further, evolving into something stronger and more meaningful—a true family of artists.” – Chad Holliday
