The Leavessel series began in 2011 while Rob Stern was teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington. Inspired by the fractal patterns of fallen leaves in his Dallas yard, Stern developed a method of building leaf forms like coiled ceramic pots. Each leaf is individually textured using custom metal stamps, creating a unique surface across the vessel.

This particular piece features a radiant tonal shift from red to yellow—evoking the warmth and drama of a sunset or sunrise. The design was originally selected for the prestigious Pilchuck centerpiece project, where Stern led a team to produce 150 pieces for the annual auction gala.

After an eight-year hiatus, Stern revived the series, continuing to evolve its form and texture. This Leavessel is part of that renewed exploration.
