Created live during Gallery Night at SiNaCa Studios in March 2025, Squared Distortion is a part of the Distortion Series. In this series, the thickness of the vessel plays a critical role in creating a distorted view through and around the piece. Large sections of glass are ground away to open new visual pathways, while surface lenses—created using a series of diamond wheels—further distort the viewer’s perspective. These lenses not only shift the perception of the embedded murrini, but also alter how the surrounding environment is seen through the piece. Twisted orange patterns ripple across the surface, creating a dynamic sense of movement and depth. The piece stands tall and elegant, inviting viewers to explore its layered complexity from every angle. Its semi-spherical form and internal color play evoke both chaos and calm, offering a meditative contrast that draws the eye and stirs the imagination.
Kevin McGehee has been working as a glass artist for over 25 years. As a glass blowing instructor and studios coordinator at SiNaCa, he plays an active role in both the creative and operational sides of the studio. His work explores the interplay of form, color, and texture to evoke a visceral response from the viewer.
“SiNaCa Studios is a place for learning, connecting and sharing this amazing material that is glass. Its programming brings in people of all ages to have a hands-on experience to come away with a better appreciation of what you can do with glass.” -Kevin McGehee
